Zoo Education Facilitator Senior Teaching Assistant – City of Albuquerque

November 16, 2022 – Educational programs at ABQ BioPark Zoo focus on on-the-ground interpretation. This includes conservation education programs, summer and spring break day camps, evening and overnight programs, tours, encounters with animal ambassadors, and general exhibit interpretation. The educational facilitator is responsible for the certification and presentation of the animal ambassadors; carry out an informal and formal interpretation of the exhibition; and the implementation of various programs. This position is mainly located at the Zoo.

The position of Zoo Education Facilitator is filled by a temporary recruitment agency and reports to the Zoo Education Coordinator. The zoo’s education coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating the zoo’s educational activities. This includes handling and training animals and working with volunteer interpreters.

Education Requirements and Qualifications

Recommended education and experience requirements include two years of formal or informal teaching experience, preferably in science. Formal education may be interchangeable with a degree with majors in science, education, or a related field, plus one year of experience in informal educational programming. Work experience teaching zoos and/or aquariums is a plus. Those selected for the position must pass a background check.


  • Present formal and informal educational programs on zoo grounds, including food storytelling, general interpretation, discovery days, tours, etc.
  • Assist in the training of zoo guides and volunteer trainings
  • Help with summer and spring breaks Camp BioPark
  • Handling and displaying the collection of Ambassador Animals under the supervision of the Zoo Education Coordinator, the Animal Behavior and Enrichment Officer and the Zoo Ambassador Keepers. The program includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. The facilitator must obtain and maintain animal handling certification on animals assigned by the zoo’s education coordinator.
  • Work alongside animal ambassador zookeepers to present or perform animal ambassadors in the field
  • Work as part of the education team on BioPark-wide programming, events and planning
  • Work as part of a team that includes education volunteers
  • Computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Perform general administrative tasks of the BioPark
  • Other duties assigned by Zoo Education Coordinator or Curator of Education.

Work timetable

The work schedule is 20 to 40 hours per week. Full-time and part-time positions available. Weekend and evening hours will be required. Evening or off-hours programs will be assigned in advance. The hours of a week cannot exceed 40 hours (or part-time status agreed upon hiring). It is the responsibility of the Zoo Education Facilitator to adapt and monitor these hours in conjunction with the Zoo Education Coordinator.

Rate of pay

$15.96/hour. This position is being hired through a temporary help agency, not the City of Albuquerque.
