Triad school districts hire teachers and operational positions as staff shortage continues

Bus driver vacancies in the Piedmont Triad region:

  • Guilford County Schools: 53
  • Schools Alamance Burlington: 20
  • Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools: 19

Faye Crowder-Phillips, executive director of transportation for Guilford County Schools, said bus drivers are one of the toughest jobs to fill.

“It was about a year before the pandemic hit, when the shortage of bus drivers across the country hit us all. As we come back from the pandemic, we are finding it very difficult to get drivers,” Crowder-Phillips said.

Crowder-Phillips said for bus drivers there was an attendance and performance bonus of $1,000 per month. For all mechanics, she said there was also a $500 per month bonus for attendance and performance.

GCS also recruits for positions in building services, maintenance and school nutrition. Other larger districts in our area are doing the same in addition to looking for teachers.

Crowder-Phillips encourages people to get into education.

“It’s the most rewarding job working with our children. Working with children for tomorrow is very rewarding. And I think for a person who needs a job where they have a vacation, they’re basically in weekends off. It’s a perfect job for that type of person,” she said.
