The new school year begins at Iowa Central Community College | News, Sports, Jobs

What excites you about planning for the 2022-2023 school year?

It’s always nice to have students back on campus. They bring a positive vibe not only to our campus, but to our community.

There’s no better time to support your community college than now. We are the #1 labor producer in the state.

This year will be special with the launch of our new five-year strategic plan.

Our strategic plan is based on four main axes:

• Advance development opportunities

• Cultivate the Triton culture

• Unite through communication and collaboration

• Strengthen student engagement

Our goal is for students to come to Iowa Central and complete their degrees and/or certifications as soon as possible, with the least amount of student loan debt, so they can have a better life. Our strategic plan will help us create the first community college of choice in the state of Iowa.

Visually, there are changes on campus as the new school year approaches, such as the Triton Circle project. Can you tell us what updates are in the works? What does Decker Auditorium have in store for us?

Over the summer we were able to complete a concrete replacement project at the west entrance of Triton Circle. This project also allowed us to create a safer boarding area for students in our accommodations. We also initiated the renovation of the old Student Services Building to create the Arts and Technology Building. This renovated space will house all of our visual and graphic arts programs as well as computer science.

Additionally, the Board finalized a contract to begin construction of the Performing Arts Center, which includes the renovation of the Decker Auditorium. We will transform the auditorium space into a state-of-the-art performance hall. As part of the project, we will be adding classrooms and restrooms to make sure everyone has a better experience when they come for performances. This project will be awesome when finished.

Iowa Central will also complete a new learning center at Storm Lake and a new biofuels testing lab at Fort Dodge.

Iowa Central nurtures relationships with diverse community partners, creating mutually beneficial experiences. Can you tell us more about some of these partnerships?

Central Iowa’s business and community relationships are second to none. Last year, we had nearly 70 formal agreements with employers through which we trained more than 14,000 people in our service region. Whether it’s personalized job training, externships or career discovery, our team works hard every day to ensure people have access to the skills they need. One of the most popular programs for companies is vocational training through the 260E (Iowa Industrial New Jobs Training Program) or the 260F (Iowa Jobs Training Program). Both of these programs allow companies to provide training to their current or new employees at no cost to the company.
