THE ROLE
Having inherited an extensive technology base from our former parent company, we are undergoing a delivery and technology transformation – with a focus on building mission-critical solutions to quickly and securely deliver quality software to four main product areas:

  • Data pointsour flagship data and analytics tools for the world’s top research universities.
  • WUR Portalour data collection platform is a key part of our data pipelines, used by universities around the world.
  • Academicour flagship B2B website offering data-driven content for an academic audience.
  • Studentour latest B2C initiative to segment and leverage our vast student audience.

We’re looking for passionate and talented people to join our engineering team, you should definitely have an interest in data, whether it’s building things that produce data, visualizing data, collecting data, or to support systems that manage data – we are passionate about our business and our business is data.

Specifically, this role will report to the Head of Engineering, Applications and Services, who manages multiple teams undertaking a rewrite of our data platforms. You will lead a small team of engineers to help develop applications, services or build capabilities that will take our business and product teams to market.

You must be successful independently and be able to communicate with high-level stakeholders, as well as excellent technical abilities, including in architecture. You have previously held a technical/team lead role and are looking to take on exciting new projects and further your career in a management, technical or specialist area.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in small cross-functional teams with the ability to undertake development work independently while also working within the team
  • Experience working with product owners/managers to design and develop solutions
  • Able to own and drive a few projects and solutions at the same time
  • The ability to work closely with other technical/team leaders
  • Understanding of software design and testing methodologies
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies
  • Experience working with common software development tools such as Git and Jira
  • Experience working with data storage technologies such as MongoDB, Postgres or other SQL
  • Strong working knowledge of JavaScript/Node.JS and at least a modern front-end framework (React is highly desirable)
  • Experience with cloud providers is a must, Kubernetes, Terraform and AWS are advantageous
  • Experience with data engineering platforms or processes is desirable
  • Excellent working knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Experience or knowledge of front-end UI/UX design is desirable
  • The ability to create and work with HTTP APIs (GraphQL is desirable)

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the success of a small cross-functional product-focused development team
  • Develop front-end and back-end functionality
  • Work with the Product Manager to deliver best-in-class software solutions
  • Develop several applications and APIs, both internal and intended for users
  • Write high-quality, well-tested code
  • Perform functional and non-functional tests
  • Troubleshoot and debug applications
