Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court, who had ordered a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the appointment of teachers and non-teaching staff in public schools in West Bengal, said on Monday that “corruption endemic had occurred” and, therefore, he had to order an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In an interview with a TV news channel, ABP Ananda, the sitting judge said, “There has been rampant corruption, that’s why I had to order so many CBI investigations. I never imagined this in my life.”
“When I sat down to do justice, I could see the corruption… So I thought who should investigate this. I have enough confidence in the police, but they are controlled by different forces. Therefore, I gave it to CBI. I’m not saying CBI is unchecked, but maybe less so. Maybe they will reveal something… At that time, I had to see that I had to take very strict measures against corruption.
Stating that he is emotional, Judge Gangopadhyay said, “I can’t see the tears in people’s eyes…I was also unemployed once. Thus, I was able to see the tearful faces of young unemployed people.
Judge Gangopadhyay ordered 10 investigations by the CBI in connection with the school jobs scam.
On remarks made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, against the judiciary, Justice Gangopadhyay said he was in favor of “the strictest action” against anyone who “points the finger at the judiciary , otherwise people will lose faith in the justice system.” ”.
“He (Abhishek Banerjee, Congressman for Trinamool) once commented on the justice system. I was not in Kolkata at the time. I was in Ladakh. Sitting there, I thought I’ll issue a rule against him. I will summon him. I will take action after that. But back in Kolkata, I found out that a motion had been filed with the divisional bench in this regard, which disregarded it. They thought it would have added importance. But, I have a different opinion.
“Abhishek Banerjee said that a group of judges enjoy the protection of the BJP. If I call him to prove it, will he be able to prove it? Otherwise, he should be imprisoned for three months for lying. Later, he might have me killed, but I don’t mind.
In the context of the CBI inquiry commissioned by HC, the MP for Trinamool said on May 28: ‘I am ashamed to say that there are one or two people in the justice system who are in the hand with gloves (with the Center)…and order a CBI investigation in each case. ” —(With PTI inputs)
