Roanoke Cement Increases Availability of Low-Carbon Products with Chesapeake Terminal Expansion

CHESAPEAKE, Va., November 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week at the Chesapeake Terminal of the Roanoke Cement Company (RCC) near Norfolk. Advice members, other state and local officials and members of the RCC team came together to launch a new $40 million storage dome. In response to the growing demand for low-carbon cement, the terminal’s storage dome will provide an additional capacity of 70,000 tons, tripling the existing storage. The Chesapeake Terminal also increases truck and train capacity, and the upgraded terminal will allow for the import and distribution of other raw materials needed for concrete production.

“This significant capital improvement is another investment in anticipation of increased demand for construction materials for infrastructure development and other projects,” said Kevin Baird, president of Titan America’s Mid-Atlantic business unit, which includes RCC. “Expanding storage and upgrading marine terminals allows us to make low-carbon cement available for construction needs across the region.”

Customers are increasingly demanding low-carbon cements – which reduce carbon impact by 10% – in their infrastructure, commercial and residential works. Low-carbon cement is a sustainable solution and RCC’s investment in an integrated logistics network – by ship, truck and rail – is improving service to its customers. RCC plans to add 10 new permanent employees. Nearly 50 jobs will be created for the construction phase.

“Titan America is a leading waterfront company in Chesapeake,” said Debbie Ritter, member of the Chesapeake City Council. “The $40 million investment to expand their facilities and improve rail transport capabilities will help provide the Commonwealth with Virginia with proceeds needed to help the state and businesses continue to grow and prosper.”

“RCC has a strong and established presence in the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Don Ingrassano, senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We look forward to having the terminal completed by year-end 2023 and online for the 2024 construction season to better serve our customers.”
