Picsart study of American workers reveals lack of passion, growing entrepreneurial aspirations among younger generations and increased need for flexibility

MIAMI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Picsart, the world’s leading digital creative platform and one of the world’s top 20 most downloaded apps, today unveiled new research on how employees want to work and how employers can improve their workplace. The study – commissioned by Picsart and conducted by Wakefield Research of 2,000 nationally representative workers across the US – was deployed to better understand today’s talent and their attitudes towards their work, entrepreneurship and creative pursuits, amid the continuing great quit and growing creator economy. .

Findings from the report — 2022 Creator Economy Trends: Gen Z and Millennials at Work — show there’s huge room for improvement when it comes to happiness at work. According to the study, nearly 4 in 5 workers (78%) say their current job is not the best way to pursue their passions. Employees today instead view entrepreneurship as the best way to pursue their passions, especially Gen Z and Millennial workers, the vast majority of whom are now more interested in starting their own business and is confident in her ability to succeed as an entrepreneur. This generational divide illustrates how digital natives are increasingly looking inward for career opportunities, rather than to their current employers.

Key employee information:

  1. Gen Z and millennial workers have the greatest entrepreneurial aspirations: 4 in 5 Gen Z and Millennial workers are more interested in starting their own business than they were before the pandemic. 82% of Gen Z and 83% of Gen Y are now more interested in starting their own business, compared to 59% of baby boomers and 75% of Gen X.
  2. Gen Z and millennial workers are confident in their ability to turn their passions and creative skills into businesses: 78% of Gen Z and 77% of Millennials believe they already have a creative passion that they could turn into a lucrative business, compared to 63% of Gen X and 62% of Baby Boomers.
  3. Workers today see entrepreneurship as the number one way to pursue their passions: 41% of all employees say a side hustle or entrepreneurship is the best way to pursue their passions. 24% find the best path through hobbies; only 22% find it in their current job and 12% in different jobs.
  4. Today, employees are confident in their ability to find a better job: 85% of workers say they are quite confident that they could find a better job in a few months if they wanted to.
  5. Among the main reasons workers are confident of finding greener pastures are side hustles: For those who are convinced that a better job is within their reach, 1 in 5 (20%) say it is because they have a side job that they can pursue full time. 59% say it’s because of marketable skills and experience, 39% say it’s because they know people who could help them find a better job, and 28% feel reassured by taking aware that the labor market is tight.

How employers can respond:

  1. Allow employees to choose when they work, not just where: More than 4 in 5 employees (84%) say they are more likely to work for an asynchronous company, where team members don’t need to be online and working at the same time. A majority of employees (53%) say they prefer a hybrid way of working that mixes remote and on-site work.
  2. Support lateral scrambles: When it comes to the top 3 ways employees say their employer can help them pursue their passions 1.64% say they should offer flexible hours 2. 52% say allow remote work 3.41 % say they provide financial support to invest in promising side businesses

Methodology

This survey was commissioned by Picsart and conducted by Wakefield Research among 2,000 US adults, ages 18 and older, employed and Nationally Representative, using an email invitation and survey in line. Data has been weighted to ensure an accurate representation of nationally representative US adults ages 18 and older.
