Warren General Hospital has hundreds of yards of hallways.

And, there are people who walk through them…sometimes in need of a friendly face or a welcome distraction.

To help fill space and needs, the walls are now adorned with local photographs.

“We are a community hospital”, said marketing director George Lilja. “We want them to watch familiar things – to feel welcome and cared for.”

The idea was born from the illustrated employee wall near the main entrance and lobby. With employee photos on the wall, staff would hear comments like, “It’s my neighbor” and “She goes to my church” You have a lily.

The staff wanted to develop this.

“It’s such a community hospital, let’s capture that community pride,” he said. “We want to offer a warm welcome.”

Staff contacted local photographers. No promises, no sales.

The response was strong. “I think the photography community has responded well,” You have a lily. “They were happy to be asked.”

It worked so well, “we opened it up to all photographers in the region and to all employees,” You have a lily. “Employees have started sending photos. We like to involve employees.”

There are now over 100 photos on the walls – there are photos of familiar places, buildings and events, pleasant landscapes, creatures and flowers, neighborhoods and people.

“It’s authentic” You have a lily. “It’s all Warren County.”

“We try to capture different interests,” said Mary Ridout, Director of Digital Marketing.

Of course, the hospital occupies part of the space. There are some current photos of the hospital and its immediate surroundings. And, there are four rooms that represent the past to the present of the hospital.

Ridout is part of the committee that reviews submitted photos.

Those that are selected are printed on metal and hung in public areas of the hospital. The metal is easy to clean.

There is plenty of space for more.

“We have three floors here” You have a lily.

So far, the photos take up most of the first floor.

Patients aren’t the only ones who need a familiar touch. “I see people waiting for a loved one taking it like it’s an art gallery.” You have a lily.

If there are too many photos, some may be stored, while others are exposed.

Many who wander the length of the display and report say, “The best is the angry bluebird,” Ridout said.

It’s not an art gallery, but that doesn’t mean visitors can’t stop by to check out the art.

And, anyone who wishes to submit a high-resolution photo for consideration can do so by sending it to fkelli@wgh.org.
