It was an unexpected start to the day for 45 high school students in the Nebo School District when, at approximately 7:37 a.m., their school bus was heading east along US-6 at mile post 151 when it derived from the right shoulder of the roadway in the earth. .

According to a statement from the Utah Department of Public Safety, the bus traveled through dirt for a short distance and then corrected to the left, crossing all traffic lanes on US-6. The bus then spun off the left shoulder and hit a fence before coming to a stop in a field near the roadway.

The bus driver, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital in fair condition. A student reported a minor injury but was not transported.

“The rest of the students said they were all doing well,” the DPS statement read. “The cause of the accident is still under investigation.”

“We are so grateful that this accident wasn’t much worse, because it certainly could have been,” said Lana Hiskey, communications and community relations administrator for the Nebo School District. “We are just grateful that the students were all screened at the scene of the accident, and they all appeared to be physically fine.”

The school district was able to quickly find alternate transportation for the students involved in the accident, although some of them were picked up from the scene by their parents.

“We had another bus on the way, and the other bus arrived about thirty minutes later and was able to pick up the rest of the students who headed to school,” Hiskey said. “We contacted all the parents and let them know what happened, and that if they wanted to call or come and see their child, they were certainly welcome.”
