Nearly 70% of employees are stressed at work

A recent survey conducted by alldayPA found that the majority of people in full-time jobs experience high levels of burnout due to work-related stress and pressures.

With 72% of UK workers currently in full-time employment, statistics provided by on-demand customer service provider alldayPA showed a worrying 68% of them are stressed and overwhelmed at work.

More than a quarter of respondents (29%) attributed the cause of their stress to feeling overwhelmed by the increasing workload, while slightly fewer (27%) said their work-life balance was stressful.

17% of employees also said they struggled with their work hours when trying to achieve work-life stability.

Accounting, banking and finance have also proven to be the most stressful sectors to work in.

High levels of work-related stress were most commonly reported in London, where 9% of respondents said they were ALWAYS stressed, 28% stressed most of the time and 42% sometimes. Only 4% said they never felt stressed, 15% rarely, while 1% preferred not to comment. (These numbers have been rounded to the nearest decimal).

alldayPA also revealed that, in the struggle to cope with the rising cost of living, 30% of workers now have unrest alongside their daily work – which experts say is causing worrying levels of burnout. and anxiety.

alldayPA spoke to London-based doctor Dr Vanessa, who revealed that her side hustle as a part-time filmmaker gave her a creative outlet. “I’m passionate about my role and it earns me most of my salary, but my side job as a filmmaker and screenwriter gives me a creative outlet – it’s a passion for me first and financial benefits second.

“I work 35 to 40 hours a week for my job and I work about as much for the side job. I’m not sure I’ve achieved a healthy work-life balance yet. Instead, I achieved an incredible balance of full-employment side hustle, with each role feeding into the other.

She adds: I also think that employers offering flexible working days are extremely beneficial. For my part, I tend to work weekends in the hospital and have a few days off during the work week, which allows me to contact my clients during office hours.

According to the recent survey conducted by alldayPA, almost 58% of people also work overtime, without always being paid for their extra workload.

11% of UK workers said they worked more than 11 overtime hours, while 14% worked 7-10 hours. 23% reported working 5-6 hours overtime, 29% reported working 3-4 hours and 20% reported working up to 2 hours overtime per week. 4% preferred not to answer. A total of 40% of full-time employees in the North West said yes to overtime, but a staggering 50% (of those who said yes) are not being paid for that overtime. Similarly, of the 45% of workers in London who are currently working overtime, almost 40% (38%) of them are also not being paid for overtime.

Burnout is an increasingly troubling phenomenon that can cause our bodies to enter a state of stress, intensify symptoms of anxiety and depression, decrease motivation, and have difficulty sleeping. Burnout can also harm our physical health, as it can be a strong predictor of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory problems, among others.

Expert psychotherapist, Brooke Schwartz, commented on the hype around the culture of hustle and how employees can better manage their time for the benefit of their overall well-being:

“The belief that our productivity determines our worth is one of the main reasons people take on work they don’t have time for, or even take on an extra hustle. Our society places a high value on hard work and a “bustle culture,” and considers even those who take the time to rest and take care of themselves “lazy” or “unmotivated.”

“Consider using a strategy called time blocking, which involves dividing your schedule into designated time blocks for certain tasks. Having time blocks reduces the likelihood of procrastination, which delays work and makes it more likely you’ll finish. by working after hours.

“This can be useful when using time blocks to also block personal time. Having personal time signals programmed into your brain that you are supposed to be off the clock and not respecting not your schedule if you choose to squeeze in some more work.
