Mechanicsville High School; Lost tenders; Vacancies for teachers

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – It’s National Dog Day! Cuddle up to your fur baby while taking a look at our headlines from this Friday:

Vacancies for teachers in central Virginia

It’s the last weekend of summer for thousands of children across central Virginia.

That includes Henrico, where the division still faces nearly 200 teaching vacancies.

Just two weeks ago the division had 211 openings – it has since hired 36 teachers, bringing the number down to 175 with classes starting in three days.

Superintendent Dr. Amy Cashwell says they are leveraging multiple resources to ensure all classrooms are covered. This includes the use of coaches, central office staff and board alternates.

Football season suspended pending hazing investigation

The Mechanicsville High School Mustangs begin their football season on a forfeit basis.

The Mechanicsville High School football team was supposed to play their season opener last night, but they had to forfeit after reporting to the sheriff’s office that members of the upper class allegedly assaulted other players.

The school division suspended all JV and Varsity games due to the allegations.

A school spokesperson said it is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Many parents are hoping this will lead to changes in safety protocols – and others are hoping there will still be a season to save.

Mechanicsville was supposed to play Deep Run last night.

Deep Run can choose to accept the forfeit and achieve an automatic victory or reschedule the game.

Family members say Jimmy Merhout argued with Willie Noise about the way Merhout was driving in June 2021.

Police told them to split up but were then called to University Boulevard for a shooting.

Noise was killed by those shots. Merhout was also shot several times but survived.
