Jerene (Schmidt) Lohman

Jerene Marie (Schmidt) Lohman of Bloomfield, NE passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13 at the age of 78, after a long battle with chronic kidney disease.

Jerene has lived in Bloomfield, NE for the past 17 years where she has enjoyed her rural home, visits from neighboring family and the company of many pets.

Born in Grand Island, NE, Jerene was the twin of her brother, Jerry Schmidt. Both were adopted in 1945 by Kenneth and Amy Schmidt of Gordon, NE. They grew up on the farm northeast of town where they both grew up riding horses and were actively involved in 4-H and the riding club. Jerene graduated from Gordon High School as valedictorian for the Class of 1962 and over the years has worked in a variety of jobs, many of which she was the first woman to break into the field. She was the first female telephone repairer for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, scaling telephone poles and burying telephone line cables, and she was also Gordon’s first policewoman. Later, while living in Clear Spring, Maryland, she farmed and did accounting.

A wonderful cook and avid baker, Jerene was well known to friends, neighbors and relatives for her excellent cooking. She enjoyed entertaining at her home, throwing parties and preparing delicious meals for family gatherings, and treats for the congregation at Bazile Creek Church where she attended services and had many close friends. She also befriended the nurses in the dialysis unit at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota, where for the past 6 1/2 years she had a dialysis treatment three times a week and she loved baking treats to share with the hospital. staff there.

Recently, Jerene met two of her biological siblings and was very grateful for these new relationships and the opportunity to learn more about her biological parents and extended family.

Always leaning towards the eccentric, Jerene had a unique sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to live her life on her own terms. She has traveled and lived in many different areas, gathering experiences and friendships as she goes.

Jerene’s tough talk and gritty outlook never quite obscured the generous heart beneath, and she will be sorely missed.

Jerene is survived by her brother, Jerry Schmidt of Fernandina Beach, FL, her sister, Kathy Wilkinson of Waverly, NE, her three daughters, Trinda Hare of Morenci, AZ; Lisa Hare, of Gordon, NE; Charlee (Lohman) Smith, of Hagerstown, MD; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild and many friends.

Jerene requested that no burials, services or memorials be held, only that her cremated remains be scattered by family members in a private ceremony.
