Keller worked for an insurance company and revealed that in 2016 he started the BirdWatchingHQ.com website, according to Side Hustle Nation.

He was able to juggle the animal-themed side hustle alongside his career.

Just two years after the site launched, he earned $30,000 before earning $70,000 in 2019.

More than three-quarters of its revenue comes from advertisements, 20% from affiliates and 5% from its online store.

He said his traffic had “exploded” in 2020 amid the Covid pandemic, according to ConvertKit.

Keller revealed that he enjoyed blogging “for fun” before work, but in 2021 he decided to change jobs.

He told ConvertKit: “Suddenly you realize you’ve climbed a ladder that you never really wanted to climb in the first place. The ladder I wanted was on the other side of the room.

Keller spends “a few” hours a day working on his site before spending time with his family.

This allows him to pursue activities ranging from training to hiking.

Keller revealed that he started writing stories about the different types of binoculars people could buy, but found the strategy wasn’t working.

Keller revealed that he then targets his posts at bird watchers – those who practice the hobby religiously and occasionally.

He stumbled upon Brian Dean’s Backlinko blog and was inspired to make its content more appealing to readers.

Scott told Side Hustle Nation that Dean said writers should put themselves in the reader’s shoes.

Keller revealed he spends up to 30 hours working on each post, according to Convert Kit.

At least four articles a week are uploaded to the site – two are written by Keller himself and two by another writer.

In 2019, he installed a camera and recorded a live stream where fans could watch the birds.

He also posted the streams on his YouTube page, which sparked an online discussion.

It sends out an email twice a week, which also includes a pop-up quiz that readers can take part in.

Keller is ambitious and wants to grow the business and dreams of turning a property into an Airbnb.

He wants to install bird watching objects in the yard for guests to enjoy.

But, his immediate plans involve producing “more content, and more content”.

It is important to note that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states that if you are self-employed, you generally must file an annual return and pay estimated taxes quarterly.

The Sun spoke to a tax expert who explained how side hustle could land you a huge IRS bill.

The IRS stipulates that you must file a tax return if your net self-employment income is $400 or more.

If your net self-employment income is less than $400, you must still file a tax return if you meet any other filing requirements listed on Form 1040.
