GCHQ deputy directors on new list highlighting successful part-timers

Deputy directors of job sharing at GCHQ and a pioneering scientist are among a list of top performers working part-time.

Timewise, which promotes flexible working, said its list highlights the fight against the stigma that part-time means a lack of ambition or an inability to have responsible work.

The list includes the deputy counter-terrorism directors at GCHQ – both mothers of young children, working 28 hours a week.

Others include Dr Jane Edwards, a scientist who played a key role in efforts to develop a Covid vaccine, and Dr Kerrie Thackray, a doctor who has returned to the frontline during the pandemic, after six years of unemployment to raise five children.

A survey of 2,000 adults commissioned by Timewise to mark 10 years since the launch of its first list found that half still don’t believe it’s possible to have a part-time career.

That compares to three out of four when the same question was asked ten years ago.

Timewise said its analysis of official data showed that 750,000 people are working in senior and critical jobs in the UK on a part-time basis.

Part-timers make up a quarter of the UK’s working population, with most people wanting flexibility in their next job, Timewise said.

Its chief executive, Melissa Jamieson, said: “Working on the vaccine, fighting terrorism, saving lives on the front line. This year’s Power List winners prove beyond any doubt that part-time workers come from a pool of skilled and vital talent that the UK needs.

“They’re changing the conversation from what’s not possible when you’re working fewer hours, to what is. Flexible workers are facing perhaps their toughest year yet, in terms of stigma. We must continue to ensure that their voices are heard and their experiences are understood.
