ZANESVILLE – He joined the family business – something he hadn’t particularly expected. But it wasn’t really a difficult decision.
“I never really had a dream job,” Ben Lowe said. “I’ve always had an interest in business. I knew that growing up I wanted to be in business because of the success that could be achieved through hard work.
Today, Lowe is co-owner of Lowe’s Bargain Barn Furniture.
“I spent a lot of time working in the business with my dad, but I never really planned to continue in the business,” he said.
“My first real sign that I would continue in the family business was in 2010,” he added. “The business was growing and my dad was wearing himself out trying to manage it all. I knew the ins and outs of the furniture industry, so the transition was easy.
Now 33, Lowe grew up in Zanesville, graduated from Maysville in 2007 and then Wilmington College in 2011 with a double major in marketing and accounting.
“I officially started in the business after graduating from college in May 2011,” he said. “I brought in a lot of more modern updates like a business website, Facebook page and used Craigslist a lot in the first few years. We grew quickly and started to expand more into new furniture and new appliances. Before my job, we relied heavily on used furniture and appliances.”
His longtime friend, Chad Parker, owner of CP Lawn Care, saw the effort.
“Ben is committed to moving the family business forward and growing it to be better and bigger for his descendants,” Parker said. “Ben is an honest and hardworking business owner who is focused on quality and serving his customers. His family gave him a leadership role and he took the opportunity to run with it.
“Looking back now,” Lowe replied, “I never regretted the choice I made. It was my first and only career path and I think it was the career that I was raised and wanted to do. For me, it has always been a way of life. I never considered it a job. I live and breathe the family business. Ask my wife.
Plus, he concluded, “I love the idea that the groundwork my father and grandfather laid could potentially provide a life and income for my children and grandchildren. We are now in the third generation of the business and I hope my children will become the fourth and best generation for Lowe’s Bargain Barn.
